Benefits of Listening Practice
Listening skill is the foundation of speaking. No matter which language you are learning, you need to go through a phase of understanding listening before you can start speaking.
This is also how children absorb their mother tongue, by listening a lot until one day they can start speaking.
Listening to English also helps you naturally learn new vocabulary, grammar, and improve speaking skills.
Even if you are not a beginner, you should still dedicate 80% of your English learning to listening skills.
Introducing the Spelling Dictation method
Simply put, Listening Dictation is when you write down each sentence from a short audio clip of about 3-5 minutes.
You need an audio source that is just right for you (remember, just right means about 80% understood, with 20% unknown), a notebook, and a pen.
Sounds easy, right? Just 3-5 minutes and you're done?
Well, those 3-5 minutes can actually take up more than an hour of your time to complete thoroughly.
Guide to Learning
Step 1: Dictation
- Find an audio source that suits you (important note: the audio source must come with a script).
- Use music player software with loop playback feature (suggested: Gom Player for desktop, jetaudio for iPhone).
- Use the A-B repeat function to listen to and repeat each sentence in the audio until you can transcribe the entire passage.
Step 2: Error Correction
- Review the script to see how much you got correct.
- Identify where your mistakes are.
- Once done, turn off the script and start transcribing again until you can achieve over 90% accuracy.
This is the most crucial step in dictation because there will be phrases you can't hear clearly due to inaccuracies in our sound filters caused by not learning proper pronunciation early on.
The process of "can't hear – make mistakes – correct mistakes – listen again..." will help you recognize and gradually correct your sound filters accurately.
Step 3: Repeat Listening
- Listen after you have transcribed the dictation. Listen to each passage for 15 minutes.
- Listen while doing light activities that don't require much thought: walking, hanging clothes, sweeping, eating, etc.

3. All items must be returned in their original condition, without scratches or signs of wear, and must not be resized or altered in any way.
4. When returning or exchanging items, customers must use a shipping method that has tracking on it. Returns or exchanges with no tracking will not be processed.
5. For return, any promotional gifts received must be included with the returned items. Otherwise, the retail price of the promotional gift will be deducted from the refund.
Note: Please do not send your return to the address on your package. That is not our return address and will affect the processing of your return.
